Malay PM to discuss Maldives oil exploration proposal with Petronas

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has agreed to discuss with Malaysian national oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) a proposal by the Maldives for oil and mineral exploration.

The decision was announced by visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim while delivering his press statement on Tuesday after wrapping up official talks with Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The proposal was one of the subjects discussed during the talks.

PM Anwar told reporters that he would discuss the proposal with Petronas, noting the multinational company’s extensive experience in the field.

“I will have to discuss this with Petronas. I believe, with the strength of Petronas has now throughout the world, from Canada to Turkmenistan, to Sudan, to Suriname, and Peru and Brazil, I don’t think it’s too much of a problem to come closer here to Maldives,” he said.

“If they are not able to explore oil, they can at least rest a few days here.”

PM Anwar also announced on Tuesday that Malaysia has agreed to extend a USD 100 million facility to the Maldives.

He added that the two leaders agreed to hold a meeting of the joint commission between Maldives and Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur before the end of this year, and also discussed resolving visa issues facing parents of Maldivian students in Malaysia, and boosting cooperation in healthcare.

PM Anwar had arrived in Male’ on Monday night, on his maiden visit to the Maldives since assuming office in November 2022. He was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Republic Square in Male’ in the morning, after which both he and President Muizzu adjourned to the President’s Office for official talks.

The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding on boosting cooperation in defense and Islamic affairs.
