Candidacy opens for MDP national council elections

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Saturday opened candidacy for its upcoming national council elections.

The MDP is set to hold its internal elections on November 27. The party has opened applications for positions within the national council as well as some additional posts.

Candidacy is open for:

  • National council members from atolls and cities
  • National council members of island and city constituencies
  • Vice president of island and city constituencies
  • Secretary of island and city constituencies
  • Female secretary of island and city constituencies
  • Youth secretary of island and city constituencies
  • President of women’s wing
  • Women’s wing representative at national council
  • President of youth wing
  • Youth wing representative at national council

Registered party members as of 02:00 pm October 20 are eligible to contest the elections. Applications must be filed via the Yellow App by 02:00 pm October 25.

The party says that candidacy applications for national council elections are subject to an administrative fee of MVR 1,000.

The internal elections follows the MDP congress, during which the party made major amendments to its standing orders.
