Traffic officer knocked down during duty; suspect arrested after attempted getaway

A young man has been arrested for attempting to flee after driving his motorcycle into a police officer on a street in Male' City.

Police said the incident occurred at 17:34 pm on Friday, when a man drove into a traffic police officer on duty at the junction of Chaandhanee Magu and Majeedhee Magu and then tried to escape.

The officer sustained injuries, though police said they were not serious.

Saain Abdul Gayoom, 23, from Hathi/GDh. Faresmaathoda, was arrested in connection with the case. He was produced before the court on Saturday for a remand hearing and was ordered to remain in custody for 15 days.

Police said the motorcycle involved in the incident has been towed, and further investigations are underway.

There have been previous cases of individuals disobeying police while controlling traffic, including incidents where officers have been struck by vehicles.
