19-year-old recovering after gas leak in Maafannu home that killed her mother

The 19-year-old woman is recovering after the gas leak incident inside a home in Male' City that left her mother dead.

Maldives Police Service said officers received a report at 10:34am on Thursday after two women were found in a weakened state inside a residence in Dilkushaa Goalhi, Maafannu. Both were rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) later confirmed the death of 51-year-old Zahida Thaufeeq, Dhafthar No. RS 6210, Male'. Zahida’s 19-year-old daughter, who was also affected by the gas leak, is being treated at ADK Hospital, where doctors say her condition has been steadily improving.

Police said the incident remains under investigation, including determining the source and circumstances of the gas leak.
