Over 5,600 babies born in 2025, most of them boys

The Maldives registered the live birth of over 5,600 babies last year, most of them boys.

The quarterly vital statistics report for 2025, compiled by the Health Ministry in collaboration with the Maldives Bureau of Statics, shows that 5,625 live births and 1,399 deaths occurred in the Maldives last year.

Of the 5,625 children born last year, 2,835 were male and 2,789 were female.

Live births in Q1 2025:

• Male: 730
• Female: 697
• Total: 1,427

Live births in Q2 2025:

• Male: 677
• Female: 702
• Total: 1,380

This includes one live birth where the sex was not stated.

Live births in Q3 2025:

• Male: 692
• Female: 682
• Total: 1,374

Live births in Q4 2025:

• Male: 736
• Female: 708
• Total: 1,444

The statistics show the highest number of live births took place in December with 545 children, followed by 506 in July and 504 in March.

The lowest number of births were in September, with 421 children born during the month.

The statistics also show a rise in children born to women in their early 30s, with 1,796 children born to women aged 30-34, followed by 1,561 children born to women aged 25-29.

The 2022 census places the Maldives’ population at 515,132, including 382,639 Maldivian citizens and 132,493 foreign nationals who reside in the country. Females were higher than males in the local population, with 194,562 females and 188,077 males.
