Over 43% of Maldives’ population concentrated in Male’

Over 43 percent of the total residential population of the Maldives is projected to live in Male’, according to statistics released by the Maldives Bureau of Statistics on occasion of World Population Day.

The report, publicized by the Statistics Bureau on Saturday, places the projected residential population of the Maldives is 590,079.

A staggering 254,556 people – accounting for 43.14 percent of the total resident population – reside in the capital.

335,522 – accounting for 56.86 percent of the population – reside in islands outside Male’.

The statistics also show that foreigners account for a large percentage of the country’s residential population.

Male’:

  • Total population: 254,556
  • Resident Maldivians: 168,931
  • Resident foreigners: 85,625

Atolls:

  • Total population: 335,522
  • Resident Maldivians: 225,123
  • Resident foreigners: 110,399

The statistics show that one in every three residents in Male’ is a foreigner.

In administrative islands, it is one in every five residents, and in non-administrative islands such as resorts and industrial islands, foreigners make up 80 percent of the population.
