MIFCO begins selling ice to fishermen from Kanduoiygiri plant

Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) on Monday began selling ice to fishermen from the ice plant developed in K. Kanduoiygiri, an island located close to Male’ City.

MIFCO had opened an ice plant and dried fish factory in Kanduoiygiri back on July 13.

On Monday, MIFCO announced via X that it has begin selling ice to fishermen from the plant.

A spokesperson from MIFCO told Sun that the plant is selling ice at the rate of MVR 0.75 per kilo and MVR 750 per ton.

The ice plant in Kanduoiygiri has the capacity to produce 25 tons of ice per day.

MIFCO believes enabling access to ice from the island offers a huge convenience to fishermen in the Male’ region.

The operationalization of the Kanduoiygiri plant comes after the Bodu Kanneli Masveringe Union (BKMU), a union of yellowfin tuna fishermen, expressed concern earlier in July regarding difficulties in accessing ice from MIFCO’s plants.

The union said that MIFCO’s plants had imposed a daily sales limit of two tons per fishing vessel, which they said was not enough.

Expanding access to ice for fishermen was among President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledges.
