Three young men have been fined a total of MVR 8,000 for dangerous driving and causing fear and danger to the public on the Sinamale’ Bridge.
A video circulating on social media shows four motorcycles speeding along the bridge highway, with three riders lying flat on their bikes in what is known as a superman-pose while travelling at high speed.
Police said three of the motorcycles were taken into custody for 30 days on Saturday. Two of the riders were fined MVR 2,000 each, while the third was fined MVR 4,000 for repeated reckless driving.
Police said a report on the incident will also be submitted to the Ministry of Transport.
Reckless speeding has led to serious accidents in the past, including fatalities, most of them involving young people.
According to police statistics, traffic accidents are the second-highest category of reported cases this year, after theft. A total of 1,751 traffic accident cases have been reported so far.
