A woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for carrying drugs hidden inside her bra. The case, involving an arrest made in June 2024 at Hanimaadhoo International Airport, was decided on the 16th of this month by the Kulhudhuffushi Magistrate Court.

The prosecution filed two separate trafficking charges against Aminath Lamha of Kosheege, H.Dh. Kulhudhuffushi: trafficking a Schedule I drug and trafficking diamorphine.

Lamha was charged with trafficking a Schedule I drug after officers recovered a juice packet wrapped in white tissue containing methamphetamine racemate from the left cup of her bra while she was travelling through the Hanimaadhoo route. The second charge was filed after diamorphine (heroin) was found concealed in the right cup of her bra. She was arrested at Hanimaadhoo airport.

Lamha denied both charges during trial. However, the court ruled that the prosecution had proven the case based on the evidence presented.

She was sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000 for each of the two offences, a total of 50 years in jail and MVR 200,000 in fines. After deducting the 60 days she spent in custody during the investigation, Lamha will serve 49 years and 10 months.
