MDP’s Maavah MP Ahmed Shakir has formally requested Parliament's State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee to summon Fenaka Corporation’s Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hussain over the prolonged unresolved electricity crisis in L. Hithadhoo.

In a letter addressed to Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, MP Shakir called on the government to reduce unnecessary expenditure and ensure the provision of constitutionally guaranteed basic rights to all citizens without discrimination.

The lawmaker noted that residents of Hithadhoo have been seeking a permanent solution to the island's electricity problems since the beginning of the year.

Shakir stated that two of the island's three generators are currently out of service, resulting in power outages every 30 minutes. He said the recurring interruptions have severely disrupted residents' daily lives and caused irreparable damage to costly household electrical appliances.

"This administration has proven unable to resolve the electricity crisis in Hithadhoo," Shakir said in his letter, adding that no adequate solution has been implemented despite the prolonged nature of the issue.

Addressing the situation previously, Fenaka Corporation's Hithadhoo branch said the outages were caused by the failure of the island's largest 600kW generator. The branch explained that the remaining two generators are unable to meet the island's total electricity demand simultaneously, requiring power to be supplied on a rotational basis between two zones every hour.

The electricity crisis in Hithadhoo, an island with a population of around 1,000, has been escalating over the past six months.

Noting that the issue directly affects the livelihoods of residents, Shakir requested that the SOE Committee convene an urgent meeting to address the matter. Complaints of power interruptions have also increased recently across several islands served by Fenaka Corporation.
