Boat involved in hit-and-run with speedboat still at large

Maldives Police Service has confirmed that the boat involved in a serious maritime collision near the official jetty in Malé on Friday night remains at large after fleeing the scene without stopping.

According to Marine Police, the collision took place at approximately 21:10pm.

Authorities received a report at 21:16pm informing that a speedboat identified as ‘Legion 1’ had docked near Izzudheen Jetty after being involved in the incident. The other vessel left the area immediately following the collision, and police have since launched an operation to locate it.

Five people sustained injuries in the collision and were treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). The injured comprised of four expatriate males and one Maldivian male. Images and videos shared on social media show the speedboat sustained extensive damage.

Police said one side of ‘Legion 1’ was severely damaged on impact, with the seating area also showing signs of significant impact. Marine Police, together with a dedicated investigation team, are conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The incident comes amid a recent increase in maritime accidents across the Maldives. A similar serious collision involving a supply vessel and a speedboat was reported on June 2nd
