More than 3,000 people have joined PayPal in the short time since it was launched in the Maldives, of whom 2,159 have already activated their PayPal wallets, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said Monday.
The President was responding to a question from a journalist at a press conference held at the President’s Office.
PayPal officially launched its services in the Maldives on the 15th of this month through Ooredoo’s digital wallet, m‑Faisaa.
The President said 3,280 people have linked their accounts to PayPal to date, which he described as an achievement never before realized in the country.
With PayPal, Maldivian businesses can now sell goods to foreign customers and receive payments directly.
“It is really remarkable for us that something that was never achieved before has been achieved,” he said.
Additionally, international businesses that accept PayPal can now pay Maldivian merchants and make ‘global‑to‑local’ transactions via m‑Faisaa without any hassle.
When asked at the press conference about complaints that some PayPal features remain unavailable, including the app not appearing on the Play Store, the President said this is only the first step. He said more capabilities will be unlocked as the service continues to develop.
The introduction of the world’s most widely used payment system in the Maldives marks a major step forward for the growth of small and medium enterprises.
Users can now easily transfer money between their PayPal and Ooredoo m‑Faisaa accounts.
