Police said the Gang Crime Suppression Department (GCSD), together with the Male' City Council, has removed graffiti from several locations across Male'.
The Gang Crime Suppression Department is a specialized anti-gang unit within the Maldives Police Service, tasked with deterring and investigating organized crime, operating under the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology.
According to police, the operation is part of ongoing efforts to keep the city clean and uphold social standards.
Police said Monday’s operation targeted improper paintings and graffiti on various streets and walls, including areas on the Sinamale' Bridge.
Police noted that this work is being carried out as part of a series of operations. Therefore, similar drawings and inscriptions in other parts of the city will continue to be removed.
The Male' City Council and the Maldives Police Service formally launched a joint campaign to eradicate graffiti in different parts of the city on July 17, 2024. The operation was also conducted in 2023.
Graffiti is most commonly found in narrow streets and gang‑associated areas. Some of the writings contain inappropriate language.
