Police Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed and Home Minister Ali Ihusaan have expressed their gratitude to the civilian divers who recovered the body of a police officer who died during a maritime operation on Wednesday.
Senior Sergeant Ahmed Asif was found dead underwater on Wednesday evening while on duty aboard Police Launch 57. Police said the officer went missing during the operation, prompting an immediate search. He was located underwater and taken to the A.A. Mathiveri Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have since released the names of the civilians who assisted in recovering Asif’s body: Ahmed Faisal, Meeraz from A.A. Ukulhas, and Saddam Ahmed from Blue Haven/K. Gaafaru.
According to police, the divers played a crucial role in locating the missing officer and bringing his body to the surface. Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed and Minister Ihusaan contacted each of them separately to thank them for stepping forward to help.
They noted that such public assistance reflects the unity and compassion often seen in Maldivian society during emergencies. Both the Commissioner and the Minister also underscored the importance of close cooperation between rescue services and the public, stressing that the divers’ contribution was invaluable to the operation.
Senior Sergeant Asif was posthumously promoted on Thursday in recognition of his service.
