India’s national airline, Air India has suspended flights between Male’ City and Delhi through August.
The suspension is part of a major reduction in global flights announced by the airline back in May.
In addition to suspending Delhi-Male’ flights, the airline has also temporarily halted flights to multiple destinations including Chicago, Shanghai, and Dhaka.
The airline has also reduced the frequency of flights to international destinations.
Air India said the changes were due to a combination of factors, including continued airspace restrictions over certain regions and record high jet fuel prices for international operations, which it says have significantly impacted the commercial viability of certain planned services.
The airline said it continues to work closely with the regulators, airport authorities, and industry partners to restore full capacity as soon as conditions permit, but may make further adjustments to its network, should the extraordinary operating environment prevail.
Air India launched operations in the Maldives on February 21, 1976 – becoming the first Indian airline to start flights to the island nation.
The suspension of the airline’s flights during the summer season is expected to have a significant impact on tourist arrivals from India – which is among the top ten sources for arrivals to the country.
