Former President Mohamed Nasheed, on Thursday, remarked that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) remains the political party he loves most, adding that he does not wish to die a member of any other party.
Nasheed made the remarks during a meeting with party members in F. Bilehdhoo as part of his campaign tour for the upcoming MDP Chairperson election.
Responding to a question from a party member regarding whether he would leave the MDP if he were unsuccessful in the election, Nasheed assured supporters that he would remain with the party regardless of the outcome. However, he noted that if defeated, he would choose to remain at home, suggesting he would step back from active politics.
Emphasizing the sacrifices made in establishing the MDP, Nasheed reaffirmed his loyalty to the party, stating that he would continue as a member unless the party itself decided to expel him. He urged members not to question his commitment and used a strong metaphor to describe his allegiance.
"MDP is the party I love the most. I will remain in this party as long as I am not cast out. If a part my body were to be cut, I would bleed yellow. I do not wish to die as anything other than an MDP member," Nasheed declared.
During his campaign travels across the country, Nasheed has consistently called on party members to remain united while outlining his vision for the party’s future. He reiterated that his objective is to increase MDP membership to more than 100,000.
