The Health Protection Agency (HPA) says dengue cases recorded so far this year have already surpassed the total number of cases reported in 2025.
Speaking on PSM’s Raajje Miadhu programme, HPA Public Health Coordinator Adam Rifau said dengue cases are rising across the country, not concentrated in any particular atoll or island.
“Compared to last year, the number of cases so far this year has now exceeded all total cases last year,” Rifau said.
HPA Public Health Coordinator Mohamed Hamzath added that although the first half of the year has not yet ended, the number of dengue cases is already higher than last year’s total.
HPA statistics show that around 2,500 dengue cases were reported in 2025. The agency’s latest figures indicate that more than 2,000 cases have been reported so far this year.
Two dengue‑related deaths have been recorded this year.
The first was on April 13, a 23‑year‑old man from Sh. Milandhoo.
The second was on April 24, a 17‑year‑old girl from M. Muli.
Dengue is one of the most common illnesses in the Maldives, with cases typically rising during the rainy season. The disease is caused by the Aedes mosquito, and while some infections remain mild or asymptomatic, dengue can quickly become severe and life‑threatening.
