Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has appealed to seafarers to exercise heightened caution following forecasts by the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) indicating that adverse weather conditions are expected to prevail over the nation.
According to the Met Office, the Hulhangu Moosun (Southwest Monsoon) is intensifying across the Maldives, bringing stronger winds and rougher seas, particularly in the central and southern atolls.
The MNDF has advised all maritime travelers to notify the relevant authorities of their travel plans prior to departure. Vessel owners and operators have also been instructed to ensure that all essential safety equipment, including life jackets, communication systems, and bilge pumps, are fully operational.
Additionally, cargo vessel operators have been warned against overloading and urged to ensure that all cargo is properly secured and stabilized. Those undertaking night voyages have been advised to remain especially vigilant, while organizers of diving and water sports activities have also been urged to closely monitor weather updates.
The MNDF further issued a strong directive advising against sea travel during periods where a yellow or orange alert issued by the Met Office is in effect.
The advisory comes as many citizens prepare to travel for the upcoming Eid holidays. The Met Office confirmed that this year’s Southwest Monsoon began in the southern atolls on May 8, according to its seasonal forecast released on May 10. The monsoon is expected to gradually extend to the central atolls in the coming days, with the entire country likely to come under the influence of the Southwest Monsoon by the end of May. Traditionally, the season extends from May through November.
The Met Office has also issued a nationwide advisory warning of strong winds and rough seas across much of the Maldives. The conditions are being attributed to a depression developing southeast of the country and a low-pressure trough to the northeast, both of which are generating extensive heavy rain clouds.
In light of the expected sea conditions, travelers have been urged to prioritize safety precautions. The Coast Guard has specifically called on operators of small vessels and cargo ships to strictly comply with all maritime safety standards and regulations.
This year, Hajj Day will be observed on Tuesday, while Eid al-Adha falls on Wednesday, June 27. As is customary during the holiday period, large numbers of people are expected to travel to islands across the country.
