Met Office forecasts rain in the coming days as adverse weather expected to prevail

Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office), on Thursday, forecasted that adverse weather conditions will persist across the country, with more rain expected in the coming days.

Maldives is currently experiencing the effects of the Southwest Monsoon, which has brought on heavy rainfall, causing wave surges across some islands.

According to the Met Office, rain is expected across various parts of the country through this weekend. However, the office noted that the intensity is not expected to be extreme, with a slight improvement in weather anticipated next week on Sunday and Monday.

Despite the temporary improvement, the office emphasized that scattered shows are likely to continue. For the next 24 hours, the Met Office predicts rain across the northern and southern regions, with a possibility of thunderstorms in some islands.

In the central atolls, light showers are expected. Winds are projected to blow between 10 to 20 mph in the northern and central regions, with gusts potentially reaching up to 35 mph during squalls.

Statistics from the Met Office show that GDh. Faresmaathoda recorded the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, with 48.3 mm of rain.

In light of the severe weather conditions, strong winds, and rough seas, both the Met Office and security services have urged sea travelers to exercise caution.

As the Met Office predicts further bad weather, several tragic incidents have occurred due to strong winds and turbulent seas. On August 31st, a landing craft traveling from K. Thilafushi sank near K. Gaafaru after taking in water, leaving two individuals missing.

While those two individuals remain missing, another incident occurred late last night where a supply boat traveling from L. Atoll to Huvadhoo Atoll took on water and sank. Three Maldivians—the boat's captain, a soldier, and a police officer—are reported missing following the incident.

Relevant authorities continue to advise travelers to pay special attention to safety measures both before and during their journeys to prevent dangerous maritime incidents and to safeguard lives and property during this period of heavy rain and rough seas.
