MET forecasts rain, thunderstorms and possible flooding across Maldives today

Rain and flooding are expected across most parts of the Maldives on Sunday, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office).

The MET Office said scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are likely over northern and central atolls until 18:00 on Sunday, while isolated showers are expected in southern atolls. South and southwesterly winds are forecast at 5 - 15 mph in southern atolls, and west to southwesterly winds at 13 - 23 mph elsewhere, with gusts reaching 40 mph during showers.

Sea conditions are expected to be slight in southern atolls and rough across central and northern regions. Swell wave surges, locally known as udha, where waves crash over island edges causing flooding, are possible during high tides, and the public has been advised to remain cautious.

Temperatures will be high across the country on Sunday, with 35.7 degrees Celsius expected in Male' City, 34.3 degrees Celsius in Hanimaadhoo, and 33.8 degrees Celsius in the southernmost atolls.

Heavy rain has affected many parts of the country over the past week as the southwest monsoon continues. Hulhule' recorded the highest rainfall on Saturday at 26.9 mm, followed by Male' City with 25.8 mm. Hulhumale' received 15.7 mm, while K. Dhiffushi recorded 15 mm.

Last week’s bad weather also caused flooding from swell waves in several islands. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Saturday that Dh. Rinbidhoo and L. Isdhoo were affected by swell-wave flooding on Friday. NDMA said island councils, institutions and residents in Rinbidhoo worked together to place sandbags to reduce damage to homes and roads.

The rainy period coincided with school holidays, leading to increased travel over the past two weeks. With the second term beginning on Sunday, the MET Office said weather conditions are expected to improve over the next couple of days.
