Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, the president of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and the parliamentary representative Meedhoo constituency, has called for collective efforts within the society to ensure a safe and secure environment for children and to protect them from all forms of abuse.
Siyam made the appeal in a statement commemorating Children's Day, which is observed in the Maldives annually on May 10th.
In his statement, Siyam stressed that ensuring the safety and protection of children is both an individual and collective responsibility, emphasizing the importance of translating that responsibility into meaningful action.
He expressed deep concern over the recent rise in various forms of abuse and crimes committed against children in the Maldives. He underscored the critical need for state institutions, parents, and the wider community to work together to shield children from such dangers.
Siyam urged relevant authorities to strengthen the implementation and enforcement of laws aimed at protecting children's rights. He also called for the imposition of the harshest legal penalties against individuals who neglect or abuse children, while advocating for a zero-tolerance approach in the investigation of such cases.
Noting that children represent the generation that will shape the future of the nation, Siyam also highlighted the importance of raising them in accordance with strong Islamic principles and values.
Concluding his message by extending Children's Day greetings to children and their parents across the country, Siyam called for sustained and unwavering efforts to ensure the safety, well-being, and protection of all children.
