The Maldives is expected to continue to face heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, according to the national weather agency.

The current spell of bad weather has been attributed to the monsoon transitional period, as the Northeast or Iruvai Monsoon transitions into Southwest or Hulhangu Monsoon.

The Maldives Meteorological Service reported on Monday that it expects fairly widespread rain with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms with gusts of 40 miles per hour to persists over the next 24 hours, with central and southern regions expected to be particularly hard-hit.

Seas are expected to be moderate becoming rough during showers.

The Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert for moderate thunderstorms for the area from Lh. Atoll to V. Atoll.

The alert is in effect until at least 01:00 pm.

The Meteorological Service issued a statement on Sunday announcing that it expects total rainfall, and minimum and maximum temperatures to be above-normal over most parts of the country from June to September.

According to the agency, the forecast is based on April climate conditions and overall characteristics of rainfall and temperatures from the June to September period.
