Maldives Police Service has rejected allegations that an individual sustained serious injuries as a result of the use of excessive force by officers during an opposition MDP protest held in Malé City on Tuesday night.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police acknowledged reports circulating that suggested a person taken to hospital from the protest area had been injured due to the use of excessive force by the Police.
However, the authority confirmed that there is no link between any measures taken to control the protest and the injuries or deterioration of the condition of the individual.
The Police further stated that, contrary to claims circulating on social media and in certain media outlets, no force was used by officers to control last night’s protest. The authority assured that the incident involving the individual was not caused by any measures taken by the Police
Emphasizing that the spread of false and inaccurate information undermines public trust in state institutions and adversely affects public services, the Police urged media outlets and the general public to verify the accuracy of information before sharing it.
MDP has been holding nightly protests in Malé. Opposition figures have alleged that several individuals sustained injuries and required hospital treatment during the protest held in the capital last night.
