Fisheries Ministry has announced that all fishing vessels operating in the Maldives will receive fuel from State Trading Organization (STO) at subsidized rates starting Wednesday.
Subsidized fuel rates for commercial fishing vessels were previously limited to skipjack tuna vessels, but was expanded to include yellowfin tuna vessels in March.
In a statement on Tuesday morning, the ministry announced that the government has arranged for all fishing vessels to have access to fuel at subsidized rates from STO’s fuel sheds.
This change is effective Wednesday, announced the ministry.
The ministry said that vessels registered with the state’s ‘Fahi Hakatha’ initiative for fishermen will receive fuel from 13 islands. They are:

The decision to expand government subsidies on fuel sold to fishermen comes as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Israeli war on Iran causes the worst global oil supply shock in decades, sending oil prices skyrocketing.
