Hussain Fahmy, who previously headed the State Electric Company (STELCO) before his abrupt dismissal last September, has been appointed as the managing director of Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).

The Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB) confirm Fahmy was appointed as a board member and managing director of MWSC on Tuesday.

He replaces the company’s former managing director Abdul Matheen, who resigned on Sunday.

Matheen’s resignation was part of a series of resignations and dismissals that rocked the top management of state-owned enterprises following the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s recent defeat in the local council elections.

Hussain Didi and Mohamed Najah were dismissed from their positions as managing directors of Agro National Corporation and Fenaka Corporation, respectively, while Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO)’s CEO Farhath Shaheer and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL)’s managing director Mohamed Rishwan resigned.

Fahmy, who worked at STELCO for over 27 years, was appointed as the company’s managing director on November 23, 2023. However, he was dismissed less than two years later, on September 7, 2025, without any official explanation. He was appointed the next day as principal secretary to the president on policy and manifesto – a minister-level post at the President’s Office.

While the administration provided no official explanation for Fahmy’s dismissal, it came amid criticism against STELCO as well as the government over a series of power outages in the greater Male’ area, including a total blackout on June 1, 2025 that left the heavily populated Maldivian capital without electricity for nearly six hours. And a second one on August 9, 2025 that lasted nearly three hours.
