Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muthalib says the government is amending the disability category in the housing scheme to allow parents of people with disabilities to apply for flats on their behalf.
In a post on X, the minister said the conditions under the family housing programme’s disability category are being revised. Under the amendment, people with disabilities will also retain the option to apply directly if they wish.
The government has also eased residency requirements for this category. While the general rule requires applicants to have lived in Male' for 15 years, people with disabilities will be eligible if they have lived in the city for at least five years.

In addition, individuals who must travel to Male' to access disability‑related services, or who have relocated to Male' for such services, will also be allowed to apply under this category.
A total of 7,900 flats and 15,000 land plots of 1,250 sqft will be allocated under the housing scheme. The deadline for submitting applications is April 30, and forms must be submitted through the dedicated housing portal.
The government describes the initiative as a major effort to expand housing access for a large number of people.
