President vows to complete housing projects and finish handover before term’s end

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has provided assurance that housing projects will be completed and the units handed over to recipients by the end of his five-year term.

He made the remark during a ceremony held on Sunday morning to mark the Maldives’ 61st Independence Day.

In his address, President Muizzu said that his administration aimed to make history by becoming the first Maldivian administration to complete its housing projects and finish the handover before the end of its term.

President Muizzu’s administration plans to issue 15,000 plots of land from Rasmale’ and 7,800 flats from the greater Male’ area.

He had pledged to resolve the housing crisis facing the country before he leaves office in 2028.

The deadline for the housing schemes had expired on June 15.

During Sunday’s ceremony, President Muizzu reassured the people that the list of recipients will be announced before the end of this year.

Referring to the ‘Binveriya’ land scheme launched by the previous administration, President Muizzu said that his administration was working on handing over the plots issued from “seas and lagoons.”

He said that his administration had finished handing over land from Hulhumale’ Phase II, and will begin handing over the land in Hulhumale’ Phase III and Gulhifalhu soon.

He added that land reclamation in Giraavaru Falhu will be completed within the next “two to three months.”

President Muizzu said that land reclamation in Rasmale’ – his own administration’s biggest housing projects – will be done by the end of this year.

“In Sha Allah, our hope is to and our assurance that we will complete it by the of this term, making it the first time in Maldivian history for an administration to complete practical works on housing projects and hand it over to recipients during a presidential term,” he said.

President Muizzu said that the work on the Fahi flats had only been 25 percent complete when his administration took office in 2023, but that his administration had finished the project and was handing over the flats to its recipients.

He described this as proof of his administration’s priority to ensuring housing for citizens.
