A 32‑year‑old man has been sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison for trafficking dimorphine, according to the Maldives Police Service.
Police identified the suspect as Ali Saaim, Sheeraazy, S. Feydhoo. In addition to the prison term, he was also fined MVR 50,000. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday.
Saaim was arrested on 19 August 2024 on suspicion of drug possession and trafficking. Police said the investigation was completed and forwarded to the Prosecutor General’s Office on 16 October 2024, after which charges were filed.
Police described the conviction as part of ongoing efforts, in collaboration with relevant agencies, to combat drug trafficking across the country. The Maldives Police Service has repeatedly stated that it is working to ensure the strictest legal action against drug dealers.
Under current Maldivian law, drug trafficking is punishable by life imprisonment, and in recent cases, courts have also imposed the death penalty on individuals convicted of large‑scale drug smuggling.
