From the demonstration led by People's National Front (PNF) in Male' city calling for the resignation of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, April 7, 2026.
The People’s National Front (PNF) launched a series of rallies in Male' City on Tuesday evening calling for the resignation of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The first rally was held at the Raalhugandu area, where participants claimed that President Muizzu no longer holds the mandate of the people following last Saturday’s local council and women’s development committee elections.
Alongside those elections, a public vote was taken on whether to hold the two main national elections together. The opposition MDP won the majority of seats in the polls, while provisional results show that 68 percent of voters rejected the government‑backed proposal to combine the elections.
When asked about the movement, PNF Secretary General Maleeh Jamal said the rallies were initiated by general members of the party who requested continued action. He said the purpose of the movement is to remind the public that the election results demonstrate a lack of support for the current administration. According to Maleeh, only about 30 percent of the electorate supports the government.
He added that the PNF’s rallies will continue, though he did not specify which evenings the events will be held.
The PNF launched its activities while President Muizzu departed for Umrah on Monday with First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.
Following Saturday’s elections, several senior opposition MDP leaders have also publicly called for the president’s resignation.
