Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim urged people to trust the advice and instructions of medical experts on Tuesday, as he warned of the dangers of health misinformation being spread on social media and other platforms.

He made the remark in an address on occasion of World Health Day, which is being celebrated this year under the theme, “Together for health. Stand with science,” highlighting the power of scientific collaboration to protect the health of people, animals, plants, and the planet.

In his address, Nazim said that in this era of technological advancement, both disinformation and misinformation on health are being spread unchecked on social media and other platforms, especially disinformation regarding the spread of diseases and cures.

Nazim described these as irresponsible acts that endanger lives.

“Therefore, it is important to be vigilant regarding such acts, be vigilant regarding your health and that of your family, and trust in the advice and instructions of health institutions and medical experts,” he said.

Nazim said that Maldives’ health system is based on evidence-based medical science, modern resources, and healthcare workers who are educated and trained.

He credited Maldives’ success in combatting, treating and even eradicating diseases to the country’s reliance on medical science and evidence-based information.

Nazim said that safety, quality and accessibility, remain the government’s top priority in the provision of healthcare services.

“The top priority in all healthcare services provided by the government is ensuring the quality and safety of the services. On ensuring easy access to services. To boost public trust in medical cures, healthcare services, and the healthcare system,” he said.

Nazim provided assurance of the government’s continued efforts to improve the healthcare system.
