MDP President Abdulla Shahid says the people of Maldives want the party’s “golden‑yellow army” to stand together and work collectively to change the current government.

Speaking at Monday evening’s rally, Shahid said the MDP’s victories in the local council elections, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and the referendum show that the public has placed its trust in the party once again.

He said the MDP’s task now is to defeat the ruling PNC government and “put Maldives back on the right track.”

Shahid urged party members to unite and move forward with determination.

“The hopes of the people of Maldives are too big for our scales. The scale symbolizes progress and development. Let us continue with all the people who are with us in that hope. We cannot turn back. The people want us to move forward. Let us go together and defeat this government,” Shahid said.

He also called on government‑aligned MPs to “take off their shackles” and stand with the people.

Shahid thanked all voters who supported MDP candidates in the council and WDC elections, as well as those who voted against the proposed merger of the two major elections.

Provisional results show MDP candidates leading in Male', Addu, Fuvahmulah, Kulhudhuffushi and Thinadhoo cities, while also securing the WDC presidencies in all five cities.

The results also indicate that a significant majority voted against the government’s proposed constitutional amendment to combine the presidential and parliamentary elections.
