JP loses Maamigili council majority for the first time

Jumhoory Party (JP)'s leader Qasim Ibrahim: Qasim states merging elections is a measure long overdue in order to ensure political stability in the nation.

The Jumhooree Party (JP) has lost its long‑held majority in the A.Dh. Maamigili Council for the first time, following Saturday’s local council by‑elections.

JP, led by Maamigili MP and businessman Gasim Ibrahim, has traditionally controlled the council. However, in the latest vote, the party secured only the council president’s seat and one member’s seat.

The ruling PNC won two of the remaining three council seats, while the opposition MDP won one.

In the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) election, PNC won three of the five seats, with the remaining two going to JP.

Saturday’s elections saw the MDP win the most seats nationwide, including the mayorships of five cities and the presidency of the National WDC.
