The Jumhoory Party (JP) has decided to support ruling PNC candidates in the upcoming local council elections scheduled for April.

A JP official told Sun on Monday that the party council resolved to contest only the A.Dh. Maamigili constituency, while backing PNC candidates in all other islands. Maamigili is the home constituency of JP leader and MP Qasim Ibrahim.

The party will formally notify the PNC of its decision.

JP did not endorse any candidate in the second round of the 2023 presidential election. Following President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s victory, Qasim has been cooperating with the administration and expressing support for its policies.

Meanwhile, the opposition MDP has confirmed it will contest the April 4 elections. The Democrats, led by former President Mohamed Nasheed and his supporters, also announced on Sunday that they will field candidates.
