The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) remains silent on investigations into allegations of corruption and bribery against the government, linked to the upcoming local council elections.
Sun has asked the ACC regarding the number of cases lodged with the commission involving allegations of misuse of state resources and undue influence in the campaign, as well as whether the commission has initiated any elections-related investigations of its own.
The corruption watchdog has not responded to these questions, despite being repeatedly asked over the last two days.
The Maldivian people are set to vote on Saturday in the local council elections as well as a referendum on synchronizing the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Several decisions have come under scrutiny as possible attempts to influence the votes.
Earlier this week, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) decided to use the MVR 200,000 discount on finishing costs for Hiyaa flats in Hulhumale’ Phase II to offset any outstanding rent. This move effectively waives two years of rent for tenants who have no outstanding payments.
And in February, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the decision to provide MVR 100,000 to residents of the Sinamale’ and Male’ Hiyaa flats who have settled the full payments and now own their units. The ACC confirmed it received a case regarding this decision on February 17, but has not provided any update since.
Various State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) and state institutions have also announced job vacancies close to the election, including over 150 vacancies by Road Development Corporation (RDC), over 1,000 by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), and 40 by Customs, with candidates given just four days to apply for the latter.
When questioned about these job openings on Monday, President Muizzu told reporters that SOEs recruit workers for projects, and that it has nothing to do with the election.
