The Health Ministry has opened a review into allegations of negligence in the death of a six-year-old boy with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.
Ibrahim Azan Suhail, 6, died on Wednesday at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), a little over a week after his mother, Aminath Yashfa, took to social media to express frustration and helplessness at lack of assess to a PEG tube that she needed to feed her son.
According to a Facebook post she wrote on March 16, she ordered it from State Trading Organization (STO) back in August last year, but was told eight months later that the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) had denied the request, despite repeatedly contacting STO and visiting the STO Hulhumale’ Pharmacy seeking an update.
“Now my son needs an immediate change of PEG, but we there is no spare one. I'm helpless as it's no a thing which can we get from other pharmacies. Today Sto pharmacy called said that nspa didn't approve it and that's the reason they haven't ordered it yet,” she wrote.
“Why didn’t STO inform us of this all this time? And what is the reason why NSPA cant approve it? This is the only way to get any food or drink into this child.”
The case gained public attention after activist Midhuam Saud began positing about it on social media.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Midhuam said that concerned members of the public managed to get the tube through a private party and messaged Azan’s mother, only to be told that her son was taking his last breaths.

Remember this case?
We finally managed to get the tube through a private party, brought it to the Maldives, but didn’t tell the mom to surprise her… I got ready to go deliver it, so EXCITED, messaged the mother…
And this was her reply.
It was too late!

A screenshot he shared of his text messages show IGMH informed her of the receipt of PEG tubes earlier this week, but Azan’s condition had deteriorated to the level that it could no longer be attached.
He died later that day.
In a post on X on Thursday afternoon, the Health Ministry announced they were “looking into the death of Ibrahim Azan Suhail, M. Cheese, on March 25, 2026, in collaboration with relevant authorities.”

The announcement comes as calls grow for STO and NSPA to be held accountable for the delay in suppling the family with the PEG tube.
