As part of the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency medical transportation across the atolls, a new batch of 17 ambulances was officially handed over to health centres and hospitals on Thursday.
Health Ministry stated that the newly delivered ambulances will replace old and worn-down vehicles that are currently out of service on several islands.
The latest delivery marks the completion of a project awarded to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to procure 31 ambulances for atoll health facilities at a total cost of MVR 36.2 million.
The contract was awarded to MPL in December 2025, with the first batch of 14 ambulances distributed to the designated islands on March 9, 2026.
With the handover of the remaining 17 ambulances, the current administration has commissioned a total of 87 new ambulances to date, significantly expanding emergency medical transport services nationwide. The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring sustainable and reliable ambulance services across all inhabited islands of the Maldives.

In addition, the Ministry of Health announced that 10 specialised paramedic ambulances are expected to be procured later this year to support the introduction of paramedic services in the Greater Malé Area and other urban centres.
The Ministry also confirmed that additional ambulances will be procured and delivered within the year to four islands where emergency transportation services are currently unavailable.
