Police officer assaulted in Hulhumale’ Phase II

The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into an incident in which a police officer was assaulted and seriously injured inside a Hiyaa Tower in Hulhumalé Phase II.

Video footage circulating on social media shows the officer being escorted out of a Hiyaa apartment by several police officers while suffering from a severe head injury and heavy bleeding. The footage also shows some members of the public attempting to confront him as he was being taken away.

Several serious allegations concerning the injured officer have also been circulating on social media.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the officer has received medical treatment at a hospital. Preliminary information indicates that the officer was not on official duty at the time of the assault.

The spokesperson added that police are actively investigating the circumstances of the incident and will take all necessary legal action. Further information will be shared as the investigation progresses.
