Two Indian nationals arrested for smuggling seven kilograms of hashish oil

Two Indian nationals have been arrested on suspicion of smuggling nearly seven kilograms of drugs into the Maldives.

The men, aged 21 and 19, were taken before the court for a remand hearing, where the judge ordered them to remain in custody until Monday. According to the remand order, bottles of hashish oil were found inside their luggage, with a provisional weight of 6.7 kilograms. Both suspects told the court they wished to appoint lawyers.

Their arrests come in the same week that a Malaysian woman and two Maldivian men were detained in a separate case involving two kilograms of drugs.

The suspects in that case are:  

  • Ranjini Jeevananthan, 38, of Malaysia  

  • Looth Ibrahim, 29, of G.Dh. Vaadhoo  

  • Ahmed Rishmah, 21, of G.A. Dhaandhoo / Sunlightvilla  

Police said Ranjini was arrested at Velana International Airport, while Looth and Ahmed were arrested in Male' City.

The court remanded Ranjini and Looth in custody for 15 days, while Ahmed was remanded for five days.
