Criminal Court has remanded a man suspected of attacking a police officer with a sharp-edged object pending the outcome of his trial.

The 27-year-old man from HDH. Nolhivaranfaru is accused of assault with a sharp-edged weapon. Criminal Court, on Thursday, remanded him in custody pending the outcome of his trial.

According to the court order, the Police have accused the man of attacking an officer with a sharp-edged weapon.

The suspect, who has a prior criminal record, informed the court during the hearing that he wishes to appoint legal counsel.

The Court justified his continued detention based on the fulfillment of due process under the Act on Prohibition of Gang Crimes and Other Offences.

Additionally, the Court noted that the prosecution presented sufficient evidence to warrant suspicions against him, including statements from officers who responded to the scene and the victim, photographic evidence of the injuries sustained, and the suspect's criminal history.

Assaults on law enforcement officers have been recorded periodically. In a similar incident in late December, three individuals with prior criminal records were arrested in Malé for assaulting a police officer.
