A traveller's mosque symbolizing Maldivian history and craftsmanship has been opened in N. Kudafari in memory of the late father of Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, President of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and MP for Dh. Meedhoo.
The mosque, located on the portside of Kudafari, was inaugurated on Thursday by Siyam himself. Built at his personal expense in his home island, the mosque is named Masjid Al-Muhammadh Qasim in honour of his father.
Designed as an homage to the iconic Male' Friday Mosque, the new mosque showcases traditional Maldivian artistry, including coral-stone craftsmanship, intricate woodwork, and classical calligraphy. Its interior is constructed entirely from hirigaa (coral stone), echoing the techniques used in historic mosques to ensure longevity and resilience.
The structure features three doors on each side, with teakwood carvings inspired by the motifs of the Friday Mosque. While not built from the same coral stone as the original, the engravings and patterns closely mirror the artistry found in the heritage site.
A minaret, also modelled after the Friday Mosque’s design, stands beside the mosque. Ablution taps have been installed inside the minaret for the convenience of worshippers.
Siyam has previously built another grand mosque in Kudafari, Masjid Shameema Abdullah, named after his mother, which accommodates up to 700 worshippers.
With the addition of Masjid Al-Muhammadh Qasim, Kudafari now hosts two mosques built by Siyam in tribute to his parents. The new mosque is expected to stand as a lasting example of Maldivian craftsmanship and cultural preservation.
