Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) says action is being taken against residents of Hulhumale' Phase II flats who are dumping bulk waste illegally, warning that repeated violations could result in the cancellation of flat agreements.
The issue extends beyond Phase II, with members of the public also leaving garbage on the ground floors of other residential blocks. In some cases, waste piles have caught fire, leading to several incidents.
Some residents have also been leaving trash outside their own units.
FDC Managing Director Hamdhaan Shakeel said it is the responsibility of flat owners to properly dispose of the bulk waste generated when moving into their units.
“Bulk waste produced during move‑in, the big boxes, plastics, metal and wood, is the owner’s responsibility,” Hamdhaan said. “But some people are dumping these items in areas meant for daily household waste, which is not allowed.”
He said FDC is clearing the waste but is also taking action against those who violate the rules.
“We are fining those who dispose of trash illegally. If someone repeatedly violates the terms of the flat agreement, the agreement can be cancelled,” he said.
Hamdhaan noted that disposing of large waste items becomes far more costly once they accumulate, and urged residents to remove them on the day they are generated.
He added that the public must also take responsibility for proper waste disposal to maintain safety and cleanliness in the housing areas.
