Parliament has scheduled an extraordinary session for Tuesday to vote on the appointment of Dr. Aishath Rameela as the President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
Rameela, who was appointed to the commission on October 29, was nominated by the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on December 3 to serve as its chairperson. Parliament formally announced her name during the special sitting held on Monday, after the matter was delayed due to parliament's leave.
The nomination was forwarded to the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee for review. The committee unanimously decided to endorse Rameela for the post without conducting an interview, noting that she had already undergone the vetting process when she was appointed as a member of the commission late last year.
Only Rameela’s name has been placed on the agenda for Tuesday’s extraordinary sitting.
Rameela previously served as the Minister of Agriculture in the current administration before resigning on December 1, 2024, to undergo cancer treatment. She has also served twice as the State Minister of Health and holds a PhD in social sciences.
The HRCM is composed of five members. The current members are:
Vice‑President Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmood
Member Samaau Ahmed Najeeb
Member Ismail Habeeb Abdul Raheem
Member Ahmed Magsoom
