Chemistry teacher charged with five offences in case involving alleged child sexual abuse

Prosecutors have filed five charges against a 46‑year‑old teacher accused of sexually abusing a 13‑year‑old student in Male'.

The suspect, a chemistry teacher, was arrested after allegedly abusing the student while tutoring her, according to police.

The Prosecutor General’s Office has now filed five charges in connection with the case. These include child sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust, knowingly entering an unauthorized place, and obstructing law enforcement and other government functions. He is also charged with entering the residence where the child was staying with the intent to commit a sexual offence, and possession of pornography.

If convicted, the teacher faces a lengthy prison sentence under Maldivian law. The charges were reportedly submitted to court last week.

Police do not disclose the full identities of suspects in cases involving child sexual abuse.
