EC opens TikTok competition to promote public engagement ahead of April elections

The Elections Commission (EC) has launched a TikTok video competition to raise public awareness ahead of next year’s local council and women’s development committee elections.

The contest is open to Maldivians aged 18 and above, excluding election officials. Participants may enter individually or as a team, and must register online before 1500 hours on December 31.

According to EC guidelines, videos must focus on one or more of the following topics:

  • Official voting documents  

  • The importance of voting in council and committee elections  

  • Actions prohibited during elections  

  • The need to verify information from multiple sources for accurate election coverage  

Each participant may submit one video per topic, or up to four videos covering all topics.

Videos must be between 30 seconds and six minutes long, and must not promote any political party.

Submissions must be sent to the commission by 1400 hours on January 10.

The winner will receive MVR 5,000, with MVR 3,000 and MVR 2,000 awarded to second and third place respectively.

The local council and women’s committee elections are scheduled for April 4, 2026.
