EC urges against making unsubstantiated claims during political events

The Elections Commission (EC), on Thursday, has called on political parties to refrain from making unsubstantiated claims during political activities.

In a formal statement, the EC said it had observed an increase in unverified statements being made at political events and gatherings, which is unlawful. The Commission stressed that criticizing or making allegations against a political party or its members based on unverified claims constitutes a violation of the Code of Conduct established under the Political Parties Act.

While recognizing freedom of expression as a fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution, the EC emphasized that the right must be exercised responsibly. The Commission urged political parties to adhere strictly to the prescribed legal standards of conduct, avoid prohibited activities, and ensure that all political activities are conducted in accordance with Maldivian law.

The directive comes amid controversy over allegations made by former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom concerning a fire on December 12, 2024, which destroyed a building housing three government ministries. Speaking at a People's National Front (PNF) meeting last Thursday, Yameen alleged that the fire was deliberately set, claiming that police are aware of the perpetrator and have evidence to support the claim.

Responding to the allegations, Home Minister Ali Ihusaan said he had requested an investigation into Yameen’s claims. He also said he had asked the National Integrity Commission to investigate the allegations made against the police service.

However, police said on Tuesday that when officers attempted to serve Yameen with a summons in connection with his allegations, he informed them that he did not have specific information regarding the incident.

The PNF has previously announced that it will hold a major rally titled 'Fehi Signal' tonight.
