Judge Mohamed Niyaz, the longest-serving judge of the High Court, has retired from the judiciary after 23 years of service.

The High Court announced that Tuesday marked Judge Niyaz’s final day on the bench. He attended several hearings on Monday and delivered rulings in two cases before stepping down.

Judge Niyaz also resigned from his role as Vice-President of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), citing health reasons. No further details were disclosed.

He began his judicial career as Magistrate of H.Dh. Vaikaradhoo Court and later served as Senior Magistrate of the South Thiladhunmathi region. He was appointed to the High Court in January 2018 and has since been its longest-serving judge.

Judge Niyaz holds a degree in Sharia and Law from the International Islamic University of Malaysia.

His retirement comes amid sweeping changes in the judiciary this year. The Supreme Court bench was recently reshuffled, and the JSC has launched investigations into five High Court judges. Among them, Judge Mohamed Faisal has already resigned.
