Two new judges to Civil Court, three new judges to Criminal Court

New judges have been appointed to the Criminal Court and Civil Court to fill vacant positions.

The recruitment process commenced early last month after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) announced vacancies for three vacant positions at the Criminal Court. Following a comprehensive interview process, the Commission selected three candidates for appointment: Sulaiman Mohamed of Nooraaneemaage, Lh. Kurendhoo; Ahmed Thaufeeq of Daizeemaage, Ha. Dhidhdhoo; and Mohamed Abdulla of Dream, Th. Veymandoo.

Among the newly appointed Criminal Court judges, Sulaiman Mohamed holds a Bachelor of Shari’ah and Law (Honours) from the College of Islamic Studies. He has served as the Chief Magistrate of the Kurendhoo Magistrate Court since September 4, 2022, and has more than 12 years of experience in the judiciary.

Ahmed Thaufeeq brings 18 years of professional experience in the legal sector to the Criminal Court, having previously served in various capacities at the Attorney General’s Office and the Prosecutor General’s Office. Mohamed Abdulla has been serving as a Senior Public Prosecutor at the Prosecutor General’s Office since September 2017.

In addition to the Criminal Court appointments, the JSC appointed two judges to the Civil Court: Mohamed Nishath of Reelmanzil, Ga. Kanduhulhudhoo, and Aasiya Azeema of Rosevilla, R. Hulhudhuffaaru.

Nishath has more than 15 years of experience in legal and judicial positions. Asiya Azeema has previously served as a Legal Officer and subsequently as Deputy Director of Legal Affairs at the People’s Majlis.

The newly appointed judges were formally sworn into office at a ceremony held on Thursday.
