A permanent solution to Addu City’s long-standing electricity issues is expected within the next month, according to Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan Marzooq.
Speaking at a public gathering in Hithadhoo on Wednesday evening, part of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s official visit to Addu, Azaan said the city’s utility provider, Fenaka Corporation, had assured the council that the power problem would be resolved soon.
“I have no doubt that a permanent solution to the electricity problem will be found during this term,” Azaan said.
Feydhoo North MP Ismail Nizar echoed Azaan’s remarks, adding that the current administration is committed to solving the issue, unlike previous governments which, he claimed, failed to take meaningful action.
President Muizzu, addressing the same gathering, acknowledged that while eight generator sets have been delivered to Addu so far, the city still lacks a fully satisfactory solution to its frequent power outages.
He noted that Addu requires approximately 16 megawatts of electricity to meet current demand, and that infrastructure such as Gan International Airport, will require a dedicated power supply.
To address the shortfall, the government has launched a major project to establish 30 MW of electricity capacity in Addu. The President said technical and administrative work is already underway, including efforts to improve the quality of generators and power plants.
