Education Ministry: Teachers’ mental wellbeing a key part of education reforms

State Minister for Education Dr. Ahmed Mohamed states the government is committed to ensuring the wellbeing of teachers through national programs supporting mental health, professional development, and workplace wellness.

The State Minister made the remark while delivering the Maldives’ Country Statement at the 43rd Session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

In his remarks, the State Minister reaffirmed the Maldives’ dedication to UNESCO’s mission, highlighting the nation’s vulnerability to climate change and urging stronger international cooperation and customized support for Small Island Developing States.

He outlined major education reforms in the Maldives, such as the introduction of multiple learning pathways in higher secondary education to cater to diverse learners, and emphasized the government’s ongoing initiatives to wellbeing of teachers through national programs focused on mental health, professional growth, and workplace wellness.

"Maldives regards the same priority to teachers' mental wellbeing as the [educational] curriculum," he added.

The State Minister also discussed the country’s pilot projects using AI-driven adaptive learning tools to promote personalized education, particularly for students in remote islands, underscoring the need for technology to be used ethically, inclusively, and equitably in education.

Additionally, he praised the proactive engagement of Maldivian youth in climate action, cultural preservation, and sustainable development, reiterating the government’s commitment to empowering young people and deepening collaboration with UNESCO to advance education, culture, and peace.

The 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference is being held at the Silk Road Samarkand Conference Centre in Uzbekistan’s historic city of Samarkand, from October 30 to November 13. The event is bringing together representatives from all 194 member states, as well as scholars, international organizations, and cultural figures.
