The linked islands of Addu City are again facing power outages.
Fenaka Corporation, which supplies electricity to Addu City, announced in a message sent to the Fenaka Addu branch’s Viber group at 12:56 that power had been cut off in Maradhoo and Feydhoo due to a technical issue with one of the engines at the central power station.
The company apologized for any inconveniences customers may face as their technical team undertakes efforts to resolve the issue.
In a later message to the group, Fenaka announced that power will be cut off to additional areas to manage the load. In this regard, the company detailed that power will be cut off to for a one-hour period to various regions, starting from Medhuvalu school area starting at 14:00pm, followed by BML area at 14:20pm.
In addition to this, Fenaka said power will be cut off for MNU area and Addu City Council at 15:00pm with power cuts extending to additional areas starting from 15:30pm.
Addu, home to the largest residential population outside of Male’, has been affected by frequent power outages for months.
Fenaka – which provides utility services in Addu – installed a 1.8-megawatt generator set on February 21 to fix the power outages in the linked islands of the city. Another 1-megawatt generator set was sent on March 13, and a 1.8-megawatt generator on March 25.
But the city continues to be affected by power disruptions.
Fenaka has previously said it needs generators to create an additional 15 kilowatts of power to fuel the city.
Many believe that Addu City’s power disruptions can be resolved once the new power house being developed in the city is complete. However, physical efforts have yet to commence on the project after the incumbent administration awarded the project to a Chinese company.
